Landing page review checklist

A short checklist for reviewing a landing page before it goes live or into an A/B test, covering the message, the copy, the design, trust and the conversion path.

The same handful of problems turn up on most landing pages, so here's a list to catch them, roughly in the order you'd scroll.

Start with the first screen

Before reading anything properly, look at the top of the page for five seconds and then look away. Could you say what it is and who it's for? If you had to squint, so will everyone else.

Then check the headline for how many promises it makes. One is ideal. Three means the team couldn't agree, and the reader can tell.

Look at the button too. "Get started" tells me nothing. "Start your free trial" or "Book a 20 minute demo" tells me what happens next. And if the hero image is a stock photo of people pointing at a laptop, swap it for the product.

Read the copy like a stranger

Does it talk about my problem before it talks about your features? Most pages get this backwards.

Circle every claim and ask whether you could defend it if a customer emailed to check. Hunt down internal names, too. Your team knows what "Workspaces 2.0" means. Visitors really don't.

And read it on your phone. Long sentences that look fine on a big monitor turn into walls of text at phone width.

Then the design

Shrink the browser to phone size and see whether the main button is still reachable without a lot of scrolling. Check that text is easy to read against its background, especially light grey on white, which is everyone's favorite mistake. If spacing looks uneven somewhere, it probably is.

Trust

Is the social proof real and specific? A named review or a logo you have permission to use beats "loved by thousands". Would anyone be surprised by the price or by what happens after they click? Is there a way to ask a question before committing?

The conversion path

Fill in the form yourself. Count the fields and cut any you don't need today. Submit it and make sure you land somewhere that says it worked. Then check your analytics to see the click and the submit actually showed up, because a page you can't measure is a page you can't improve.

Getting feedback you can act on

"I don't love the hero" isn't something anyone can fix. "The headline makes two promises, pick one" is.

Ask reviewers to pin comments directly on the headline, button or section they mean with Lasso. Each note carries a screenshot, the team can reply in place, and you can export the lot to ChatGPT or Claude to draft new versions.

Questions people ask

What should I check first on a landing page?

The first screen. Can someone tell what it is, who it's for and what to do next within a few seconds, without scrolling? Most other fixes matter less than that.

How do I collect landing page feedback from several people?

Have everyone comment on the live page itself rather than in separate docs. Pinned comments with screenshots keep each note attached to the exact headline or button it's about.
