Link to specific text on a web page

Paste a page address and the words you want to point at. You get a link that scrolls straight to them and highlights them.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there’s no sign up.

Chrome can also do this by itself. Select the text, right-click and choose Copy link to highlight. This tool is handy when you’re not on the page, want to tidy a long selection, or need the link for a doc. More in our guide to text links.

Questions people ask

How does a link to specific text work?

It adds a text fragment to the end of the URL, starting with #:~:text=. Browsers that support it scroll to the first match of those words and highlight them. Others just open the page.

Why does the highlight not show up?

The words have to match the page exactly. If the text changed, sits inside a closed tab or only loads after a click, the browser can’t find it. Shorter, distinctive phrases work best.

Is this tool free?

Yes, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
