Comment on an area of a page

Sometimes the note is about a whole section, a gap or a layout, not one element. Drag a box in Lasso and the comment pins to that area with a screenshot of it.

Lasso is a free Chrome extension for commenting on any website, with the screenshot taken for you.Get Lasso, it’s free

Clicking an element is great when the note is about that one thing. A button label, a headline, a price. But plenty of feedback is about an area. The spacing between the cards. The row of logos. The whole hero on mobile.

For those, drag a box.

How to do it

  1. Click Add comment in the side panel, or press Alt+C.
  2. Instead of clicking, press and drag across the area you mean. An orange dashed outline shows what you're selecting.
  3. Let go, type your comment and press ⌘ Enter.

The screenshot is of exactly the area you drew, so someone reading it later sees the whole section, not one element out of context.

When it's the better choice

  • Layout and spacing. "These three cards don't line up" is about the group, not any one card.
  • Missing things. You can't click something that isn't there. Draw a box where it should go.
  • Canvas apps. Google Sheets, Docs and Figma draw on a canvas, so there's no element to anchor to. A box works fine.
  • Big sections. A comment on the whole pricing table reads better as an area than as a pin on one cell.

How it stays put

Element comments follow their element around, even when the layout shifts. Area comments are anchored to their spot on the page instead, so a redesign of the markup underneath can't knock them loose.

You can also drag any pin after you've placed it, if you want to nudge it.

Questions people ask

When should I drag a box instead of clicking?

When the note is about a group of things, the space between them, or something that isn't a single element, like a chart drawn on a canvas.

Does the box move if the page changes?

An area comment is anchored to its position on the page rather than to an element, so it stays where you drew it even when the markup underneath changes.

Can I comment on Google Sheets or Figma this way?

Yes. Those apps draw on a canvas, so there's no single element to click. Dragging a box over the area works.
